Definitive laser hair removal

Practical information on permanent laser hair removal

Permanent laser hair removal works through photothermolysis, a process that destroys hair follicles without the need for anesthesia. Typically, an average of 5 to 10 sessions, spaced 6 to 10 weeks apart depending on the area, is required to achieve the desired result. The duration of each session varies based on the area being treated, and multiple areas can be addressed in a single session.

Before undergoing the procedure, a preliminary consultation is conducted where all necessary information is provided, a cost estimate is prepared, and a test is conducted to ensure suitability for the treatment.

The practitioners offering this service are specialists in laser hair removal, with experience dating back to 1997.

What You Need to Know About Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal destroys hair follicles through photothermolysis, without the need for anesthesia.

The duration of a session varies according to the area, and multiple areas can be treated in the same session. An average of 5 to 10 sessions, spaced 6 to 10 weeks apart depending on the areas, is required to achieve the result.

Since the laser is attracted to pigment, it is less effective on gray, blond, and red hair, which are less pigmented, and completely ineffective on white hair.

For dark skin (phototypes 5 & 6 (black skin)), the melanin in the skin competes with the melanin in the hair, making the risks to the skin a contraindication for the treatment.

Clinique du Lac uses various types of lasers. Depending on the patient, certain lasers are more suitable than others, and the settings must be perfectly mastered. We offer alexandrite and diode lasers, which are more active on light skin, as well as Nd-YAG lasers that can treat pigmented skin.

Laser Treatment and Results

Except in certain specific cases, between 6 and 8 sessions are required. The hair is most susceptible to destruction during its growth (anagen) phase when the melanin content is highest. Since not all hairs are in this phase simultaneously, multiple sessions are necessary.

Certain areas, such as the chin, often require annual maintenance.

Patient satisfaction is considered excellent. After several sessions, this method can achieve truly long-lasting, even permanent results. However, there are exceptions which are unfortunately unpredictable, difficult to quantify, and anticipate.

Aftercare Following a Laser Hair Removal Session

The treatment is generally well-tolerated. Side effects are almost non-existent or at most minor. After the session, the appearance of the treated area varies from one patient to another, depending on the extent of the procedure and skin type.

Redness and slight swelling around each follicle are clinically desirable outcomes indicating that the follicle has responded to the treatment. A sensation similar to a sunburn may also be felt. These effects last from a few minutes to a few hours. A soothing cream can be applied following the session.
